Harassment on WordPress.

Yesterday I wrote a post called The British Tag, which was just a jokey post where I answer questions about my Britishness. I never thought it would lead to me be harassed.

A few minutes after I’d published my post it was rebogged. Yay! Right? So I clicked on the site who had reblogged it and that’s where I saw that the only other posts this person had were pictures of his penis and posts asking people, specifically young British teens, to text him. This made me really uncomfortable, and I didn’t want my post being linked to someone like this. I commented on the post and asked him why he posted it, and if he could take it down, and that he needs to label his content as mature because anyone could visit his site.

He then apologised, and I thought that would be the end of it. Until he sent me three comments in a row asking what I thought of his pictures, and whether I’d be impressed. I felt disgusted. I was Skyping my friend, Zack, at the time and I asked him what to do. He helped me message the guy back and basically we told him to stop. But in the time we had replied to his comment, he had already sent meΒ four more and all of them were asking about my friends and whether my friends were girls and ifΒ I knew any teenage girls. At this point I reported him.

I reported him for a few reasons:

  1. He kept sending me explicit messages/comments on my posts. I won’t post them here but seriously, it was actually disgusting and very threatening.
  2. His blog was not labelled as mature, so anyone could go on it without verifying their age.
  3. He had no idea how old I was. I could have been a 10 year old girl for all he knew, and to send me messages asking for me to send/receive explicit images was not okay because although I am a big girl and I can handle it, there are young children on this site and they could be put in upsetting situations through this.
I am so glad I had my friend to talk me through this, because the whole situation made me feel really uncomfortable and upset. Many of you know I have had a rough past with things like this, and I have been sexuallyΒ abused before. Although this was nowhere near as upsetting as my past, it still really affected me.
In the end I messaged the guy and I told him that if he didn’t stop messaging me/commenting on my posts, I would call the police, and since he had conveniently left his mobile number on the site it wouldn’t be too hard to find him. A few minutes later Zack let me know that the guy had deleted his account! We won!
However, there are still countless blogs and websites and people out there that are encouraging young people to put themselves in sexually compromising situations. So please, if any of you reading this have had something similar, or has friends who are in a similar situation, go tell someone. It doesn’t matter if it’s a teacher, friend, doctor, therapist, parent, or a trusted family member. Or come tell me! Because although this story had a happy ending, I know that is very rarely the case. You do not have to do anything you are not comfortable with, and if anyone says anything or does anything that makes you feel uncomfortable that is not okay. You do not have to put up with it. Even if you have had a relationship with that person, or if you are currently in a relationship with that person, or if that person is someone you trust, you still do not have to do something that makes you feel upset. And if any of you want to speak to me about this, or anything else that’s bothering you, my door (or should I say my inbox) is always open.
Thank you for reading.

  1. That’s nasty omg, and he’s a danger to this site, you were right in reporting him .
I’m so glad you have supportive friends and I’m sorry to hear about what happened in the past 😭 I didn’t know and I’m just happy you’re okay now ❀

  2. Got the same guy on my comments a couple days ago… reported him for nude content and contact details. The site is now down, thankfully. I got comments asking “are you a teen girl, have a look at my site, other girls love it”. It’s wrong to ask for someone’s age, and all the content on his site was disgusting. I’m so glad it’s been stopped. You did a great job and helped the whole WordPress community, so thank you.

    • Yeah, I’ve had him comment on a few of my posts before and I just automatically deleted them. But he’s never reblogged my posts, and to send me really explicit comments was just a step too far. Thank you so much for your support! I’m so glad he can’t message someone who might be more vulnerable.

  3. Hugs! I think you did the right thing. Also, how does one mark their blog as mature? I have a note on my first post that is kept at the top of my blog. Also any time I post more adult content I put that in the title. I don’t post often adult content. Though I would like to make my blog marked as mature as a precaution.

    • You can either contact WordPress, but you can also report your own blog as “mature”. So go to your blog, then in the top left hand corner there will be a “my site” button, hover over it and press “report content” then report it as mature. You won’t be banned, but WordPress will know that you’ll be posting adult content. However, if you need more support look at the wordpress support forums or talk to them and I’m sure they’ll be happy to help πŸ™‚

    • Thank you so much for spreading the word πŸ™‚ And you’re right! People on WordPress are entitled to their opinions and lifestyles, but when this could be dangerous and considered harassment, it crosses a line. I’m so glad he’s off WordPress now πŸ™‚

  4. I am so sorry that you had to go through this. The Internet can be the most supportive caring place to share with others and then it can be downright scary, intimidating and harassing. A double edged sword. Glad you were able to take control of the situation and do the right thing and get the right result.. shutting him down. Good that you shared your experience with others as well who might not know what to do if it happened to them.

  5. I guess the person you are talking about is the same whose posts I had encountered while seeing the posts of #High School tags in my reader. And that was really disgusting because people who are not searching for those things encounter them and nobody else has any idea whether the person unknowingly encountering such things may get Mentally Disturbed. Everybody surely can’t handle it. We all know many of us are teens , most of us growing into mature individuals and are in the most critical point of our lives…… when out of all the mess of our lives, we are trying to do something good by managing our blogs with excellent contents, such people throw trash in our minds when we are still trying hard to remove other trashes from our minds.!

    Really disgusting!
And yes, of course, it was really good of you and your friend…….. Great job guys!

    • Probably, I’ve seen his posts before in the “teen” tags and I agree that’s not okay because people who are looking in these tags are not looking for naked pictures! I couldn’t agree more, it is disgusting and I’m so glad there’s one less person on here who thinks that posting these sorts of things is okay. Thank you!

  6. Aw, I was harassed on a different site. The guy was saying (it was a chat room in a video game) that women can’t be president and that gays are idiots and all this terrible stuff. When I told him I reported him, he started messaging me directly all this awful stuff. Thankfully I was able to report him!

  8. Oh my goodness! How horrible that this has happened on wordpress! I got this on another site from people for a while (and it was a site that was 18+ but it was still really intrusive and disturbing – I don’t think it’s ever appropriate). I hope he gets banned but I guess there’s nothing stopping him doing it again under a new email adddress. I block people for a number of reasons, and I do separate my blogs out into two blogs so anything even potentially adult goes on my second blog; although I reblog sometimes with a Trigger Warning (TW) or Not Safe For Work label (NSFW).
Often I block people who swamp my wordpress reader with posts literally every 30 seconds for hours on end, because unfollowing sometimes leaves their posts in my reader, but I’ve never had to report anyone.
I hope you’re okay and that you’re getting lots of support from people around you, this sort of thing should never happen and I am always amazed that wordpress is very quick to pick up an accidental incorrect affiliate link (I had my blog suspended over one in the time it took me to click “edit” and try and fix it once, and I had to email them 3 times to get reinstated) and yet they don’t have software that can detect explicit content that hasn’t been labelled as such, they wait until the damage has been done.

    • Yeah, I hate getting messages like this and it’s such a shame it’s happened on this site. Oh wow, I’m surprised they blocked your account because of that! I really hope he doesn’t come back on this site. Thank you for your support πŸ™‚

  9. Can I just say – thank you. Oh my god, thank you. I know exactly who this person is; I’ve had him commenting on my posts several times, and so have many of my blogging friends. He’s been coming back several times after being reported. It’s awful how people do this, because it’s unwanted, dangerous, and abusive.
